Right now, helmets and hard hats alike get retired on a fixed timetable because no practical per-unit test exists; CFL's patent-pending research, owned outright with no outside license, asks whether that gap can close. Student teams run the screening protocol under coach supervision. The same unsolved problem shows up in recreational and professional sport, military gear, and construction safety equipment.
